What is the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)?

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a comprehensive, intensive intervention tailored for young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and developmental delays. As a Naturalistic Developmental Behavioural Intervention (NDBI), ESDM focuses on teaching functional, developmentally appropriate behaviours within the child’s natural environments and routines.

This approach integrates play and daily activities to promote essential skills such as communication, social interaction, cognition, imitation, play, motor skills, and self-help skills. The ultimate goal is to nurture the child’s development and enhance their ability to perform functional skills outside of the therapy setting.

How the EDSM works

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) leverages the high plasticity of the young brain, particularly under the age of 5, to accelerate learning and development. During these formative years, the brain is most receptive to acquiring new skills and behaviours.

The ESDM targets multiple developmental domains simultaneously, engaging the child in learning opportunities every 10-20 seconds within structured, repetitive play routines. By focusing on early intervention, the ESDM aims to build a strong foundation for lifelong skills, positively impacting functional daily living and overall development.

Benefits of the EDSM

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) promotes the development of functional skills that children need for a happy, healthy, and independent life. Through play and routine activities, children learn to communicate and interact socially, skills that are reinforced by parents, caregivers, and educators in various real-life settings.

This process, known as generalisation, ensures that children can apply these skills consistently across different environments and with different people. By maintaining and generalising skills learned in therapy, the ESDM helps children to excel in everyday situations.

How the ESDM Can Help Your Child

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)’s approach goes beyond the therapy room, embedding learning in everyday activities such as meal times, bath times, and play. This method helps children understand and enjoy these routines, making them predictable and enjoyable.

By building social learning opportunities into daily routines, the ESDM enhances the child’s ability to engage with others and develop essential life skills. The involvement of parents, caregivers, and educators is crucial, as they help to reinforce and generalise the skills learned during therapy, ensuring that the child can communicate and interact effectively in all aspects of their life.
